Rupert Schmitt

...writer and performance poet

Rupert Schmitt is skilled doing oral interviews and has completed 100 journals during his lifetime. He has written a play, Mary D, and has other plays in various stages of completion. He has also written unpublished works including a novel, a memoir, and The Stained Glass Family which covers several generations of a family of artists whose art included stained glass, painting, and dance.

Rupert and his brother and sisters all attended Black Mountain College, the birthplace of much modern American art including the first Happening. He also attended the Organic School in Fairhope Alabama, founded by Marietta Johnson who believed in freedom for students to grow. It was OK to go barefoot to class at the Organic School and at Black Mountain. He has also attended colleges in California, Oregon, Washington, and Montana. He has studied writing with several major writers, wood carving with a master carver, and painting with a master artist. His first sculpture was done when he was eighteen.

The Interview is available from iUniverse, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and other booksellers in the United States and Europe. The author will gladly give readings throughout the United States provided transportation is subsidized.

is a form of autobiography. It reveals secrets. The earliest poem in the collection was published in Scribble in Utah. Other poems are from my home state Wisconsin, my adopted home Washington, North Carolina, Arizona and Mexico. The book ends with romance and a myth of Coyote. The myth is true. It happened to me during a vision quest on a rock slide. On the last page I tell about Saint Jean. It may seem presumptuous of me to have elevated Jean to sainthood. However this is what happened.

REVIEWS OF "THE INTERVIEW"

Rupert Schmitt is a poet who is both playful and wise. His poems are likely to be peopled by "skooby women,” a pet named "Stubby,” a parrot named "Moses” or a grandmother who takes time to smell the lemons. This book is blessed by a lively intelligence and is a pleasure to read. It also offers a bonus: directions for audience participation! JAMES BERTOLINO, AUTHOR OF FIRST CREDO, SNAIL RIVER AND POCKET ANIMALS,

I love the poetry book you sent me. Rupert writes much like I think and write so it is easy reading. I often feel guilty about no reading more of other people's poetry but a lot of it bores me! Ann.

I often interview the most interesting people for jobs, 5 last week, and they may appear great, but alas, when I check their references. Also "Clumsy,” reminds me that I often judge others and then am brought up short with my own shortcomings. I shared your poetry with many of my friends and coworkers. I kept having to make more copies. Your work seems to touch people in different ways. Judith says she smells lemons now. My clutzy HR person, Rae, just cracked up over the shattered chess piece. And the Interview” of course. My granddaughter had to show her boyfriend the "Interview” because his cat is a champion pooper.
