Pilar Hanson

Artist Pilar Hanson works with acrylic paint, charcoal, oil pastel, pencil, and photocopy transfers in a process of layering and mark making. Found objects and pieces of metal are sometimes incorporated into her work as well. Her paintings address subject matter pertaining to history and myth, and land and sky. The imagery used includes the marks and symbols we use to explain the world, and the methodologies of mapping and documenting.

Hanson grew up in southern California, spent much of her adult life in the Pacific Northwest, and the last several years in New Mexico and Arizona.  She studied art in both Los Angeles and Portland, Oregon, receiving an MFA degree from Portland State University. Her work is exhibited nationally, and she was featured in the Pacific Coast edition of New American Paintings.
